About Tile Tapper

Tile Tapper is a fast reaction game played on four lanes. A continuous column of black tiles scrolls down the screen, one tile per row, and you have to tap each one in order from the bottom up. A single mistake, or a tile that slips away, ends the game.

How to play

  • Tap any lane to start. Tiles then scroll down continuously.
  • There is exactly one black tile in each row, and two tiles in a row are never in the same lane.
  • You must always tap the lane of the lowest black tile you have not yet hit. Each correct tap scores one point and the tile turns pale.
  • Tapping the wrong lane ends the game, and the lane you tapped flashes red.
  • If a black tile scrolls off the bottom of the screen without being tapped, the game ends.
  • The tiles speed up with every tile you hit, until they reach their top speed at about 107 tiles. There is no time limit.

Controls

  • Touch or mouse: tap or click in a lane. You only need to hit the correct lane, not the tile itself.
  • Keyboard: D, F, J and K tap the four lanes from left to right.

Tips and strategy

  • Use the keyboard if you have one. Resting two fingers of each hand on D, F, J and K is faster and more accurate than moving a mouse.
  • Because any tap in the correct lane counts, you do not need to wait for the tile to reach your finger. Tap as soon as you know which lane is next.
  • Read ahead. Look two or three tiles up the screen so the next taps are already planned.
  • Since a lane never repeats twice in a row, you will never need to tap the same key twice in succession, which helps you anticipate.
  • Rhythm matters more than speed. Tapping in an even beat matched to the scrolling is less error-prone than rushing.

Background

Tile Tapper belongs to a family of tapping games that became popular on smartphones in 2014, where players tap black tiles on a white board while avoiding the white spaces, often to the rhythm of a piano tune. It also echoes rhythm games that use four lanes or keys, where notes scroll towards a line and must be hit in time. The D, F, J and K key layout is a common choice for four-key rhythm games, because it lets each hand rest naturally on the home row of a keyboard.

Questions

Do I have to tap the tile itself?

Does it get faster?
Yes. The scrolling speed rises with every tile you hit until it tops out at about 107 tiles.
Where is my best score saved?
Your highest tile count is stored in your browser's local storage on this device.
