About Where in the World?

Where in the World? shows a country's flag and name and asks a single question: which of five world regions is it in? It is a quick 15-round test of the mental map most people have but rarely check, and it is especially good at exposing the countries that sit on the edge of two continents.

How to play

  • A game is 15 rounds, each with a different country drawn at random from 195.
  • Choose one of five regions: Africa, Americas, Asia, Europe or Oceania.
  • Each correct answer is worth 1 point, so the maximum score is 15.
  • After you choose, the correct region turns green and a wrong pick turns red. The next country appears after about a second.
  • Region assignments follow the game's own country list. For example Russia is counted as Europe, while Cyprus, Turkiye, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan are counted as Asia.

Controls

  • Click or tap one of the five region buttons.
  • Only your first choice in each round counts.
  • Press Play again at the end for a fresh set of 15 countries.

Tips and strategy

  • North, Central and South America plus the Caribbean are all one region here, the Americas, so any Caribbean island state belongs there.
  • Oceania is the smallest group with 14 countries: Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and the Pacific island states such as Fiji, Samoa, Tonga and Kiribati.
  • Remember the edge cases: Egypt is Africa, Guyana and Suriname are Americas, Timor-Leste is Asia, and Papua New Guinea is Oceania.
  • The Caucasus countries and Cyprus are counted as Asia here even though they often take part in European events, which is a common source of wrong answers.
  • If you are unsure, the flag can help: Pan-African colours point to Africa, while a Union Jack in the corner often means Oceania.

Background

The five regions used here match the top level of the United Nations M49 geographic scheme, which groups countries into Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe and Oceania for statistical purposes. In the game's list of 195 countries, Africa has the most with 54, followed by Asia with 48, Europe with 44, the Americas with 35 and Oceania with 14. Some countries are genuinely transcontinental: Russia and Kazakhstan span Europe and Asia, Egypt reaches into Asia through the Sinai Peninsula, and Turkiye straddles the Bosphorus. Any single-region quiz has to place them somewhere, and the UN scheme is the convention followed here.

Questions

Is there a time limit?
No. Each round waits for your answer.
Why is Cyprus in Asia?
The game follows the UN statistical grouping, which places Cyprus in Western Asia even though it is a member of the European Union.
